Record albums, audio cassettes, video tapes, reel-to-reel film and audio, 8-track...so many objects we once coveted and even anxiously awaited their release are now virtually valueless. I have discovered quite a few people have held on to these objects, many times without even means of playing them. A combination of nostalgia and guilt for the original sticker prices they shelled out years ago seems to have made them cling to these collections. Once I made it known that I was looking to make art from old media items, the response was overwhelming-it seemed that many people needed a "cause" to finally say goodbye to these items that they had taken care of and moved from house to house for reasons they couldn't explain. Creating art from mass media items has given them renewed value and I believe helps people justify saving them long past their expiration date. One VHS cassette uses up to 1,410 feet of tape (more than a quarter mile!). Billions of these tapes (along with audio cassettes, 8-track, Beta, etc.) have been produced since the early 1970s, but unfortunately very few uses for a recycled tape have been found. With it taking fewer than 100,000 VHS tapes to cover the circumference of the earth, it is likely that humans have created enough tape to completely cover the surface of our planet! The response to this series has been such that I feel like it is a direction I will continue on for some time. There will likely be an inexhaustible supply of new "old" items (people are already giving me Compact discs, computer hard drives, etc.).
