I have been deeply interested in the Hip Hop movement since the early 1980's. I have experienced D.J., beatbox and breakdance competitions, attended many rap concerts, and even had the privilege of hanging out briefly with the father of the Hip Hop movement, Afrika Bambaataa. My master’s thesis focused on street art, so the train cars pay respect to the many talented street artists of NYC and beyond, and showcase a combination of the people, style, and history of the NYC hip hop scene. Just as every piece of art I make is a new experimentation, my hope is this show reflects the qualities I admire about Hip Hop. A place where movement, sound, style, and culture continue to push the boundaries, experiment, and entertain. Created for my exhibition at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center, the series is a tribute to Hip Hop’s early days of experimentation and innovation, when budding artists were forced to use and repurpose what was available. They gave credibility to the idea that electronic devices could be considered musical instruments, and that it is not necessary to have a gallery, or stage to gain an audience.
